Vastu is part of the ancient Vedic scriptures of India. The science of Vastu originally comes from the Stapatya Veda, within the Atharva Veda, which is one of the four primary Vedas. Five thousand years ago, the great sage Srila Vyasadeva compiled the four Vedas which contain millions of verses. The word 'Veda' means complete knowledge. The original Veda is said to be spoken by God at the time of material creation. Thus, Vastu can be known as the ancient Vedic art of living in perfect harmony with nature.
The design of Vastu buildings is enacted with specific measurements and orientation, in order to resonate with the universal energy field. If it is carried out properly by an expert, then the house will overflow with healing and nourishing energy. The dimensions of the structure are related to the sacred Vastu Purusha Mandala and are calculated specifically according to an individual's birth star. The individual's birth star is utilized to create a precise dimension for the mandala of the house, and once calculated, the house will emanate positive energy for its occupants. The healing energy of the house can positively alter one's lifepath and fate.
In essence, Vastu is a guide on how to create a building which harmonizes with universal energies. Vastu is a legitimate science, it is not superstition. It is based in orientation, auspicious entry location, location of rooms, the sacred center (Brahmasthan), sacred dimensions, and geometry. Vastu architecture creates beautifully simple, symmetric structures. Entrance into the home is known to activate a subtle, presiding energy in relationship with the mandala of the house at that point. An entry doorway should be intentionally placed at a particular point to activate the most beneficial energy. According to the location of the entryway, an energy will be activated which effects one positively, negatively, or neutrally. In order to benefit from the principles and practices of Vastu, one should ideally apply them from the initial conception of a structure through the completion of construction.
How does a vastu structure resonate with the earthly and universal energies? First of all, the house needs to be in proper alignment with respect to the eight cardinal directions. The house should not be more than ten degrees off of this alignment, and if it is to be rotated, then it must be rotated in the proper direction. If these dictates are not followed, then the house has less access to the available energies. Proper alignment with such sacred geometry will enliven and nourish all of the inhabitants.
Vastu structures are set upon the Vastu Purusha Mandala. The Vastu Purusha Mandala is an energy pattern for all matter in the form of a seed, which maps out the fundamental structure of the universe. Applied to the localized form of a home, it provides a guide to where different subtle energies are presiding within the grid of the house. Once this mandala is applied to a structure which is oriented properly with respect to the cardinal directions, the structure resonates with earthy and universal energies. Vastu structures are beneficial for this very reason, they attune one with beneficial energy.
The eight directions are created from the movement of the Sun from the perspective of the Earth. The benefits of Vastu architecture are multifaceted, however one such benefit is allowing the rays of the Sun to enter into the room which is most likely to be used at any given time of day. For example, the eastern section of the house should contain large windows in order to allow the rays of the morning sun into the house. The placement of rooms in Vastu also allows the inhabitants to obtain the maximum benefit from subtle universal energies. For example, the northern direction is controlled by the demigod of wealth, Kuvera, and thus is an ideal place for a living room near the entrance of the home where business transactions may take place. In this manner, the principles laid out by the science of Vastu harmonize one with the universal energies and laws, naturally providing peace and prosperity.
